Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive labels and no ribbon, which makes it simple and low cost for short-life labels like shipping and receipts. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon to bond ink to the label, producing prints that last for years.
When direct thermal makes sense
Use it for labels that need to last weeks or a few months and stay out of heat and sunlight: shipping labels, pick tickets, temporary IDs.
When thermal transfer wins
Choose it for inventory, asset tags, product labels, healthcare and anything exposed to light, heat, chemicals or handling. It also prints on synthetic materials that direct thermal cannot.
Can one printer do both?
Yes. Most industrial and desktop thermal transfer printers can also run in direct thermal mode by removing the ribbon. Browse printers, software and hardware or ask us which model fits your volume.
